Bringing the Heart of the School Back to Life: A School Hall Floor Restoration

We’ve always believed that a space’s condition can profoundly impact the people who use it. This was never more apparent than with our recent project: the complete school hall floor restoration for Lymm High School. This wasn’t just any room; it was the vibrant heart of the school, a place where students gather for assemblies, performances, and PE lessons. For decades, its floor had endured countless footsteps, transforming from a beautiful, dynamic surface into a tired, worn out space that had seen better days. It was functional, yes, but it was clear that it was long overdue for some much needed tender loving care.

The hall itself was a substantial 400 square meters, a largescale project that required careful planning and execution. The space is a true multi-purpose area, with retractable seating for performances and a layout that allows it to function as a classroom for everything from drama to physical education. The floor’s condition reflected this heavy usage, showing deep wear and tear that needed a professional touch to revive it.

Initial Inspection

Our first step was a thorough inspection. After assessing the extent of the damage and the type of wood, we determined a precise and methodical sanding process was required to strip away the old, worn layers and reveal the beautiful timber beneath. We began with our trusty Hummel belt sander, using a series of increasingly finer abrasives: 24, 36, 50, and 80 grades. This initial phase was crucial for removing the deeply ingrained dirt and old lacquer, creating a perfectly flat and clean surface.

Following this, we switched to the Bona FlexiSand, an orbital sander perfect for achieving a flawlessly smooth finish. With this machine, we used abrasives graded 40, 60, and 100, ensuring every inch of the floor was ready for its new protective layer. This two-step sanding process, using both machines, guarantees that we achieve the highest quality result, leaving no sanding marks or imperfections behind.

With the sanding complete, it was time to apply the finish. For a high-traffic area like a school hall, durability is non-negotiable. We chose to apply Junckers’ HT700 Floor Lacquer, a professional-grade, water-based two-component polyurethane lacquer designed specifically for heavy-wear commercial floors. This product is renowned for its incredible durability and resistance to scuffs and scratches, making it the perfect choice for a busy school environment. The lacquer is also fast-drying and non-yellowing, which means the floor will maintain its beautiful, fresh look for years to come. We applied three generous coats across the main area, with a fourth coat where the retractable seating tracks run, giving those high-friction zones extra protection.

A critical step in our process, which our lads never skip, is de-nibbing the floor between coats. This involves lightly sanding the surface to remove any tiny imperfections or “nibs” that may have settled in the wet lacquer. This extra effort ensures each coat adheres perfectly, creating an incredibly smooth and durable finish that feels as good as it looks.

The final result

The final result was nothing short of breath-taking. The once tired and neglected floor was transformed into a bright, inviting, and resilient surface. More than just a cosmetic upgrade, this new floor makes a significant difference to the school and its pupils. It provides a nicer space to work and learn in, which in turn encourages a deeper sense of respect for their environment and for themselves. A beautiful space communicates a powerful message: “You are worth it.” We’re incredibly proud to have played a part in giving this school hall – and the students who use it – the renewed life it deserves.
